August Challenge: The Threshold Pause & Release

Objective

Master complete doorway impulse control without verbal repetition. Your dog must hold a rock-solid sit-stay or down-stay at an open exterior door while you step completely outside, crossing the threshold only on your explicit release word.

Why This Matters

Opening a front door is one of the highest-value environmental triggers a dog encounters. It signals freedom, walks, and visitors. If your dog breaks position the second the latch clicks, you lack true structural accountability. This challenge bridges foundational impulse control with advanced handler timing, proving that your dog respects boundaries over raw excitement.

The Rules & Execution

The Setup: Place your dog in a sit-stay or down-stay a few feet back from your front door or gate.

The Action: Open the door wide. Step completely outside onto your porch or yard, turning to face your dog.

The Hold: Maintain total stillness for 5 full seconds. If your dog creeps forward or breaks position, use your standard marker/correction, reset the position, and try again.

The Release: Give your intentional release word (e.g., "Break" or "Free") and invite the dog out to you calmly. No rushing the threshold.
